Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
